Many poor southern farmers were finding it hard to get ahead , so they
started to make and sell whiskey. It was not hard to make and it turned a nice
profit. It was also very easy to transport because you could put it in barrels
which make it easy to get up hills.
After a while the government found out about this and wanted to put a tax
on making whiskey. The farmers thought that this was unfair and they were not
going to stand for it. They banded together and burned some of the innocent
tax collector's homes.
George Washington heard of this and sent troops south to handle the
issue. When the troops arrived the rebels went home because the force of
American soldiers was to large and strong for them. This could be said to be
Washington's way of telling the nation he means
